UNIT Architects – The project was born out of a requirement to keep Sainsbury’s Whitechapel store trading whilst half of its site was taken by Crossrail. The response was to create a new three storey car park on the reduced site to retain all 258 car parking spaces. The car park structure is connected to the store via a new atrium containing vertical circulation and a cafe on the ground floor. Use of pre-fabricated components and super scale cladding panels reduced on site disruption and build time. A ribbon of printed fabric panels wraps the atrium and parking decks in a ‘pattern of products’ to create an abstract shop window onto Cambridge Heath Road.
