It seems there is an endless Oklahoman restlessness to build, to start afresh, to create opportunity. In a place that is constantly reinventing itself photography becomes essential, not just as memory and record but as a totemic instrument evoking a spirit of newness and recent completion, as though the photograph kept alive that restless desire to be in flux. Photographs speak of that moment just prior to occupation, or the day when the frame of the barn is raised and memories of the potential of the activity are refreshed, rather than the enduring solidity of the finished work. Oklahomans seem to need the reassurance that their open sky still meets an open frontier.
